When I was in high school, I was on the speech and debate team. Yes, I got up incredibly early almost every Saturday morning, put on a suit, and willingly went to school to argue with people, haha. I wasn't very fashionable then (in my defense we wore uniforms), but I knew one major fashion faux pas...that mixing black and brown was a major no-no. In fact, we used to say "black and brown make a frown". But now, I love breaking those so called fashion rules like combining brown and black with my cable maxi and southwestern cardigan.

I started this look with my favorite black cable knit maxi dress. It's the perfect base layer for any fall look. We've had an unusually warm fall here in Chicago, and one of the reasons I love this dress is that it's sleeveless. The high neck and knit material make it warm enough for those cooler fall days to wear by itself, but the lack of sleeves make it cool enough that I don't get too hot if it warms up.

When I wear the maxi dress alone, it has an incredibly chic look to it. A long pendant necklace and leopard print flats create a Parisian style fall ensemble. But it was a cooler day outside, so I layered my cable maxi and southwestern cardigan together to create a cozy, chic fall look. Southwestern printed cardigans are always one of my favorite laying pieces because they are warm, cozy, and the perfect pattern for fall.

The cable dress has such a high neck and the cardigan covers my shoulders. I wanted to create a juxtaposition with my necklace that kept the look from being too frumpy or covered. By adding a light marble necklace, it adds a pop that makes the look go from potential old lady to cold weather chic. Marble is one of my favorite jewelry trends right now. Here are a few of my favorite pieces.

This cozy cardigan from BB Dakota is a couple of years old, but the style and material have held up so well. Even though you can't find this exact pattern anymore, both BB Dakota and Jack (their sister brand) are known for creating beautiful southwestern style patterns each season. I've tagged a few of my current favorite sweaters below.

This particular one has both black and brown in it; making it the perfect way to mix black and brown in my look. The cable knit dress provided the perfect black base layer while my classic Kate Spade faux leather purse added a rich cognac brown color. Since the cardigan has a cream base, I wanted to add my taupe booties to keep the look from being too dark.

So forget the old saying "black and brown make a frown" and turn that frown upside down instead. I pulled off the look by layering my cable maxi and southwestern cardigan, but there are so many more ways you can pull off this fashion no-no. Leopard print is a great way to mix black and brown because most of the leopard patterns already have black and brown in them. Another way is through your accessories. I could have added a brown braided belt and brown booties to this look, and still looked chic.

How will you mix black and brown together?
