Pattern mixing has been one of my favorite trends for many seasons, but it always seems to be more prominent in the warmer months of spring and summer. With the air in the weather getting chillier, I'm excited to try to bring pattern mixing into fall with something I'm calling my edgy moto pattern mixing. It's basically just pattern mixing with a motorcycle jacket! Duh!

One of the easiest patterns to create a mixed pattern look is stripes; specifically large black and white stripes. I personally prefer to put anything striped on my top because I have wide hips and horizontal stripes on your lower half have a tendency to make wide hips look even bigger. So for me, a black and white striped tank top is where it's at.

Another way to mix patterns successfully is to pull out like colors within both patterns. For this look, that color is black. My patterned circle skirt is mainly burgundy and a cobalt blue with hints of black spatters in the pattern as well. Since black was the least prominent color, I wanted to use the rest of the look to bring out that color. Black and blue is always a fun color combination for me, which is part of the reason I've always loved this skirt.

But like I said in the beginning, this is the moto pattern mixing outfit...and that means it wouldn't work without my favorite motorcycle jacket. Since the look is mostly a lot of pattern, a simple black moto jacket helps break down the busyness of the two patterns. I also kept it simple with my shoes by rocking some basic black pointed-toe flats.

Even though I chose to wear flats (Drew and I just left a flea market in Chicago called Randolph Street Market so I needed cozy shoes!), one of the things I love most about this outfit is that it could easily transition to evening with a killer pair of heels. I would likely wear something similar like a black heel or a black heeled bootie so as not to make the outfit look to busy. An amazing blue heel about work great as well.

This look is great as we start transitioning into fall because it is a tank top with a light jacket. It really brings out some of those fun fall colors like burgundy and cobalt, but since it's a sleeveless top it can be worn without the jacket in case it warms up throughout the day.

Don't be afraid to try pattern mixing in the fall and winter. You might be surprised how much you like it! And if you're timid about trying pattern mixing, start with a black and white striped top (of any kind) and build off that base. Stripes and florals are an easy go-to.
